Kevin McCarthy bows out.

The problem is not the man running for Speaker; the problem is the party that unfortunate man will try to run. Whether the Republicans accept Paul Ryan or Kevin McCarthy, the result will be the same. The intractable right has come into Congress willing to sacrifice anything, even the country, in order to get their way on a narrow range of issues that often require, demand even, that the majority party reach across the aisle and compromise. But this hard-line group has demonstrated that they will not govern in this manner, hence, the House does not govern in any manner.

Who wins in this latest round? McCarthy, who would have looked like John Boehner in six months. Who loses? Paul Ryan, and he knows it. The next Speaker of the House is already set up for failure. The Republicans will never sing Kumbaya around any speaker until the party has one voice.
